Adding a Story (addstoryframe.asp)

1. This page will allow you to select how many stories you wish to add. It will then create a form to create the number of stories you requested to make. Also, old stories that have expired will automatically be deleted, unless you have extended the expiration date.

In this example I created 5 records. You must specify a Section, Headline, and Body. The photo upload and cutline are optional fields. Priority will default to 5. You may choose "Breaking News" and 1-10 as a priority. Be cautious when chosing a priority. Reserve the first 2 priorities for only very important stories. Once you have populated all of the fields, click submit.

Special Note: To create a byline, type the word "By" followed by a name. Then press return. The webpage will take note of the word "By" and the return and create the byline accordingly. You MUST use the word "By" and you MUST follow the name with a return. See the example above.

If you chose a section your webpage does not have a digest page for, you will not see the story. For example, www.newsandsentinel.com has a section titled "Speedway" that is unique to their paper. They have created a digest page to display this information. Should you wish to use the "Speedway" section, you would need to do the same. Also, some pages use a "State" section and other do not. In short, this list includes all possible sections, even though you may not be able to use each one.

To create a subheadline, press return within the headline box. This will automatically make the second line of the box the subheadline. If you do not want a subheadline, do not use a return in the headline box.

If a story is missing both the Headline and Body, no information will be loaded into the database. Therefore, if you chose to enter 20 stories and change your mind to 19, leaving a story blank will not have a negative effect.

2. The submission process may take several minutes, depending on the size of the submission. The size of the submission will be decided by story length, number or stories, and photo sizes. You will see this popup during this process.

DO NOT refresh or close your browser. Interupting this process will result in an incomplete submission and may negatively alter your webpage. The box will automatically close in 120 seconds (contrary to the 30 seconds it displays in the photo) When your submission has completed, the popup will hide behind the new page until the 120 seconds expires.

3. The next page will let you know that the submission went successfully. It will also give you a list of the pages that have been created. If any pages have expired, they will automatically deleted during this process. A list of these pages will be displayed as well.

By looking at the name of the asp page, you may gain a great deal of information about the page. For example, the second page we created is named "new32_11152004103815." This may seem like a meaningless number, but I assure you, it is not. You may be able to use this name to determine alot about the story.

Below is the breakdown of the name:

Section Abbreviation: new32_11152004103815
Priority: new32_11152004103815
Story number*: new32_11152004103815
Date: new32_11152004103815
Time: new32_1115200410381
5

* Since this story was part of a submission consisting of 5 stories, this digit tells us it was the 2nd story in the list. Had it been the thrid story, the name would be
new33_11152004103815. This allows us to give 2 stories the same priority and still specify which should appear first by placing them in order of appearance.
